Brain Film Fest

New dates for the Brain Film Fest

The third edition of the International Film Festival on the Brain will finally be held from 1 to 3 October.

Last March, everything was ready to open the third edition of the Brain Film Fest, when the coronavirus spread and all public events were suspended. Now, after intense months of work, the festival finally has new dates. It will be held from the 1st to the 3rd of October in the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona, as it was originally planned. For this new date, some new features have been incorporated, but the essence of March’s programme remains intact.

We are our brain. The reality is an interpretation of the environment and of the identity itself performed by this organ. The brain makes us who we are, feel what we feel and thanks to it two realities or two people cannot be the same. The Brain Film Fest gives us an opportunity to approach all these realities with the cinema and the brain as the main axis through short films and feature films projections, workshops, conferences and debates. With the slogan of this edition, "Open your mind", the festival invites you to explore the brain from different viewpoints: its function, the perception of the world, the different conditions and diseases, the interpersonal and social repercussions... Multiple facets of this organ that are simultaneously approached from disciplines such as science, arts or virtual reality.

One of the highlights of the festival is the presentation of the Solé Tura Award, which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary. The competition was created in 2010 by the Uszheimer Foundation and Albert Solé, son of the politician and jurist Jordi Solé Tura who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Through cinema, the prize aims to raise awareness about people suffering from brain diseases. After the first edition, the Pasqual Maragall Foundation joined the initiative, which years later would turn into a whole thematic festival. Ten years after, the award has become a reference, with 260 proposals submitted from which, 20 short films from 7 countries and 8 mini shorts have been selected.

During the summer, another award has been announced within the framework of the confinement. This is the Covid Shortfilms competition, an extraordinary event that rewards the works that reflect how the pandemic has affected various aspects of the brain, such as emotions, mental health or coexistence with dependent people. To see what the festival will be like, you can watch these videos on the website of the event along with a collection of Covid Reflections in which experts analyze the impact of the pandemic on our minds and the way we perceive the world.
