The new Technical Instruction for the Application of Sustainability Criteria in Exhibitions comes into effect

The Technical Instruction for the Application of Sustainability Criteria in Exhibitions came into effect on 18 July 2017.

The Technical Instruction for the Application of Sustainability Criteria in Exhibitions, which was the result of collaboration between Barcelona’s Urban Ecology Management Agency and the ICUB, came into effect on 18 July 2017. The new instruction comes in response to the Catalan government’s measure for responsible public procurement with social and environmental criteria (2013) and the Mayoral Decree regarding responsible public procurement with social and environmental criteria of 20 November 2013 (updated by the Mayoral Decree for sustainable public procurement, of April 2017).

The instruction defines the priorities required when contracting the different services associated with organising an exhibition, it establishes the main aspects of sustainability and environmental criteria that need to be applied to the different types of contracts for the exhibition elements that have been identified and it establishes a person who is responsible for monitoring its application. Specifically:

-It includes the sustainability aspects in all stages of the design, production, hang, take down and transporting the exhibition;
-It fosters the use of new energy saving and efficiency technologies in the design and production of the exhibition; and
-It fosters saving materials and ensures the acquisition of products and items with environmentally and socially positive qualities (recycled raw materials of sustainable or eco-designed production and origin that take into account aspects such as the elimination of toxic substances or products, durability and how easy they are to recycle)

This Instruction is added to the actions that, through the Seal of Environmental Quality, the ICUB is carrying out to improve the quality and efficiency of its facilities and activities, to reduce the environmental impact on its surroundings and to offer a better place of work and experience to both employees and users through adequate environmental management.
