Open air cinema season is here again

The Parc de l’Espanya Industrial, the Centre Cívic Cotxeres de Sants and the L’Illa Díagonal are just some of the locations that will host open air screenings over the summer months

As is customary in summertime, various centres, public spaces and venues around Barcelona will play host to open air cinema screenings. One of the most popular of these series is that which has been held over recent years in the Parc de l’Espanya, in the Sants-Montjuïc district. Organised by Punt Multimedia, located in the Casa del Mig, this edition has programmed three recent films in addition to one of the most emblematic films of the 80s, all in Spanish dubbed. The impossible, which deals with the tsunami that devastated Thailand in 2004 and is one of the most successful films in Spanish history, can be seen on the 25th of June, while the 2nd of July will be the turn of Ghostbusters, one of the most popular comedies of the era. The 9th of July has been reserved for the zombie film World War Z, one of Brad Pitt’s latest hits, while the 16th will be given over to animation in the form of Wreck-it Ralph, a Disney caper for all the family. All films will begin at 9.30 pm.

Another obligatory open air cinema fixture is the series held in the Jardins de Sant Joan de Déu, in the Centre Comercial Illa Diagonal. This, the eighth edition of the series, will take place every Thursday from the 3rd to the 31st of July under the title ¡Sin pelos en la lengua! (Tell it like it is) and will include a series of films notable for their irreverence, the verbal showdowns, and the tragicomic arguments or for reunions between friends, family and former lovers... The series kicks off on the 3rd of July with August, the cinematographic adaptation of the Broadway blockbuster starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and finishes up with the politically incorrect Three Many Weddings on the 31st. Between these dates there will be opportunities to see the French film Les Petits Mouchoirs (Little White Lies), on the 10th, Polanski’s Carnage on the 17th, with Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly, also based on a successful theatre production, and, finally, Wes Anderson’s delicious fantasy, Moonrise Kingdom, on the 24th. The venue will open its doors at 9 pm and the screenings will begin at 10. Tickets are priced at just 2 euros.

The Centre Cívic Cotxeres de Sants is another venue that has programmed open air screenings, though on this occasion the films are more recent and the subject matter more varied. The series gets off to a fine start on Thursday the 19th of June with the highly successful The Great Beauty, winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and follows up every Thursday at 10 pm with the thriller Captain Phillips, with Tom Hanks, on the 26th, Woody Allen’s tragicomedy Blue Jasmine on the 3rd of July, Cannes 2013 winner Blue is the Warmest Colour on the 10th of July and, on the 17th, the recent Catalan hit The Last Days.

The Centre Cívic Casa del Rellotge has programmed two sessions for the 3rd and 17th of July which will include Three Many Weddings (also showing in the L’Illa) and the first part of The Hunger Games, both beginning at 10 pm. In addition, every Friday during the month of July at the same time the Nau Ivanow patio will be showing a selection of films from different eras, including The Big Lebowski, on the 4th, The Getaway, on the 11th, Group 7, on the 18th and Psycho on the 25th.
