A peculiar garden at Barcelona’s Ceramics Museum

The exhibition of Turkish ceramics from Iznik enters its final days before the museum is relocated to its new home at the Museu del Disseny (Design Museum) in the DHUB building

A group of works from Iznik (Turkey) are on exhibition at the Museum of Ceramics of Barcelona from 9 October; dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the pieces all come from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon and private Barcelona collections.

Un jardí singular (A peculiar garden) represents the first chance to visit an exhibition of this type in the whole of Spain. Produced when the Ottoman Empire was at its zenith, and Istanbul was the commercial and cultural epicentre of the Middle East, these ceramic objects, so coveted by top collectors, are especially remarkable for their floral ornamentation and their vivid hues of turquoise, red, pink, green, emerald  and purple, previously unknown in Europe.

The exhibition remains open until 3rd March, when the Museum of Ceramics closes its doors to the public. After 36 years (1977-2013) of service to the city of Barcelona, promoting its ceramic heritage by means of exhibitions, programmes for adults and educational projects, the museum closes its doors to begin transferring its collections to the new headquarters of the DHUB Design Museum (Plaça de les Glòries)."
