PEN Català promotes the project “Deletrix” via crowdfunding

The multidisciplinary project is based on photographs by Joan Fontcuberta and is an attempt to raise public awareness about the lack of freedom of expression

Over the past six years well-known Catalan photographer, Joan Fontcuberta, has been visiting archives and libraries throughout Europe and North America with a particular purpose in mind: to build up a collection of photographs of texts from all eras, the authors of which have been subjected to censorship.

Based on this series of images and with the collaboration of art critic Manel Guerrero, the project is an attempt to develop an artistic initiative concerning censorship and which also involves PEN català, the platform for the international promotion of literature from the Catalan speaking territories.

The exhibition constitutes the first part of the institution’s project, Deletrix, which, beginning on the 12th of November in the Arts Santa Mònica, will exhibit Fontcuberta’s photographs along with texts in which a number of internationally renowned authors reflect on the curtailment of freedom of expression.

In order to assist with the financing of Deletrix, PEN Català have resorted to crowdfunding and sponsorship may be offered via the crowdfunding platform, Verkami.

The subject matter of Deletrix is closely related to the efforts that PEN Català have been making since 1921 for the promotion of freedom of expression, free circulation of ideas and the protection of linguistic heritage.
