Picasso Museum: Latest donations and acquisitions 2010 – 2016

115 works by the artist, 15,871 photographs by various authors, 3,277 photolithographic prints and 24,221 textual documents related to Picasso.

Barcelona’s Picasso Museum is well known for being a major centre for the study of Picasso’s formative years. The young artist’s genius is made patent in the 4,251 works that make up the museum’s permanent collection, which was founded in 1963 and which also reveals Picasso’s links with Barcelona: a close bond that was forged during his youth and teenage years and which lasted until his death. Now, until the 15th of May, the museum is offering its visitors the opportunity to get to know its most recent acquisitions and donations. These include a total of 115 works by the artist, 15,871 photographs by various authors, 3,277 photolithographic prints and 24,221 textual documents related to Picasso and the study of his work and his life that now form part of the collection. It’s an essential collection that is even better with these acquisitions, which make it one of the most important Picasso related centres in the world.

The newly acquired work that can be seen at the Picasso Museums are partly from anonymous donors, but most were donated to the museum by David Douglas Duncan in 2013, by Editorial Gustavo Gili in 2014 and from the Arxiu Brigitte Baer, donated by David Leclerc in 2015.  You will also find works donated by Alejandro Nadal Joris (2010); by Víctor Oliva, Lluís de Bonis Isern, Arturo Taracena and Peter Mussfeldt (2012);  by Anna Gaspar (2013); and by Galeria Kornfeld (2015), as well as recently purchased items. Highlights include the first exhibition of Le déjeuner sur l’herbe, according to Manet, a drawing dating from 1962, from a series in which Picasso pays tribute to the work of an artist he deeply admired; Bacanal, a drawing using a mixed technique from 1964 which represents a bucolic world with clear references to the classic past of the Mediterranean, and Parella, a late watercolour from 1968.
