The award was also given to Laia Estruch in the Visual Arts category and the Festival Reteena in Audiovisual and Digital Culture.

The first four Premis Ciutat de Barcelona 2021 — the categories of Performing ArtsMusicVisual Arts and Audiovisual and Digital Culture — have been made public. In Performing Arts, the jury has unanimously considered La Veronal company the most deserving of the award for its productions Sonoma and Opening Night. They highlighted their singularity and visual, interpretative and conceptual power, as well as the work of the performers and the rest of the artistic team.

The Festival Bachcelona is taking home the Premi Ciutat de Barcelona 2021 for music due to the relevance of the programme and the performers, the diversity of audiences, spaces and formats, and the capacity to weave complicities with different agents of the social and cultural ecosystem of Barcelona.

In the Visual Arts field, Laia Estruch has been the receiver of the recognition thanks to the project Ganivet, exhibited at the Centre de les Arts Lliures de la Fundació Joan Brossa. The jury praised the singularity and radical nature of her proposal, in which voice and body dialogue with the sculptural construction, transforming the performative possibilities.

When it comes to Audiovisual and Digital Culture, the Premi Ciutat de Barcelona 2021 went to the Festival Reteena for "directly and firmly taking the challenge of connecting audiovisuals and young people, empowering them and involving them in all its activities". The jury also valued its interconnection with the city's audiovisual fabric as a whole.

Every year, the Barcelona City Council organises the Premis Ciutat de Barcelona to reward creation, research and quality production carried out in Barcelona by creators and collectives working in the city or for Barcelona institutions and organisations that promote or produce them. The Institut de Cultura de Barcelona, which is in charge of organising the awards, wanted to deepen the citizen perspective of these prizes, which are a recognition of the city — represented by the members of the jury, proposed by the Consell de la Cultura de Barcelona and appointed by the Mayor, Ada Colau — to the talent of other citizens – the winners. During the next couple of days, the winners of the rest of the categories will be announced.
