Prizewinning film, “Una noche”, opens in cinemas

The film, a Cuba-US co-production and the first film directed by Lucy Mulloy, opens in cinemas on the 4th of April

Winner of numerous important awards in New York’s Tribeca Film Festival (actor, debut director and photography), the Cuban film Una noche, which was also presented in the Berlinale festival, opens in Barcelona cinemas on the 4th of April. A Cuba-US coproduction written and directed by debut film maker Lucy Mulloy, the film is a personal tale which focuses principally on the drama surrounding immigration.

Una noche tells the story of Raúl, a young Cuban who dreams of escaping to Miami. When he is accused of assault, his only option is to run away and he persuades his best friend Elio to leave everything behind and they try to reach their destination by crossing 150 kilometres of ocean in a dinghy. Elio’s loyalty is tested when he has to choose between helping Raúl and protecting his twin sister, Lila.

The film continually alternates between tension and hope and also deals with the subject of homosexuality, an aspect which has led to the film’s recognition in a number of gay festivals, among them the latest edition of Fire!!, Barcelona’s Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
