Robert Zucco, in the Teatre Romea

Until the 21st of April, the living will of Bernard-Marie Koltès will be staged by Julio Manrique in the Romea theatre

Roberto Zucco, (1988), the posthumous work by the French dramatist Bernard-Marie Koltès (Metz 1948 –Paris 1989) synthesises the concerns developed by the author throughout his career as a writer. Inspired by true events – Koltès became fascinated by the Italian serial killer Robert Succo – the play was first performed in Berlin in 1990, following Koltès’ death from AIDS.

The play, the living will of a man who was conscious of his illness, articulates a sense of need that makes it as compelling, visceral and powerful as any other. Robert Zucco becomes a sort of tragic, contemporary hero, a poet who eludes those who are watching him, finding complicity in the purity of children. An exploration of man’s crude, violent relationships and solitary nature.

Julio Manrique underlines the urgency of the text, its accelerated rhythm and expressionist situations. Translated into Catalan by Cristina Genebat, who also plays a role in the play, and with Pablo Derqui as protagonist, the premiere of this controversial play – almost two hours without intermission – presents a perfect opportunity to enter the world of Bernard-Marie Koltès.
