Rodríguez, in the Poble Espanyol on the 8th of July
Fans will finally have an opportunity to witness a performance by the North American artist, this year’s musical phenomenon
Sixto Rodríguez, known simply as Rodríguez, was one of the programmed highlights for the recent edition of the Primavera Sound Festival but unfortunately, for health reasons (he’s 70 years old), he was forced to cancel. Finally, he will now be making an appearance in the Poble Espanyol on the 8th of July.
The film, directed by Malik Benjellou, won this year’s Academy Award in its category and tells the story of Rodríguez, a musician from Detroit who released two albums in the early 70s and proceeded to pass virtually unnoticed in his country. In contrast to the USA, however, he was such a resounding success in South Africa that he was considered as one of the best of the best, on a par with Bob Dylan.
Recently rediscovered, the emotional nature of his life story coupled with the lyrical intensity of his songs have bestowed him with a belated fame that is currently carrying him on worldwide tours where he interprets his classics such as “I Wonder”, “Crucify Your Mind” or the song that lent the title to the documentary, “Sugar Man”.
