‘Born, sis segles de progrés comercial’

The Born’s commercial progress in a route

An urban route will take you through the history of the Born neighbourhood to reveal how it played a crucial role in Barcelona’s progress.

Since the 14th century, the Born has been one of the neighbourhoods with the most robust trade in the city. Since it was right next to the Port of Barcelona, all the goods went straight there, transforming it into a bustling economic hub. Proof of this is Santa Maria del Mar, the basilica that was built thanks to the popularity of the neighbourhood. To learn more details about the relationship between the Born and guilds, tradesmen, industrialists and tourism, the Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria has designed a night-time route called Born, sis segles de progrés comercial (Born, six centuries of commercial progress). Accompanied by a guide, the group will walk through different areas in the neighbourhood, such as La Seca, Santa Maria del Mar, the Llotja (the former commodities exchange), Ciutadella park and obviously the Born market. They have all somehow played a key role in turning this part of Barcelona into one of the main hubs of Barcelona’s trade and economy from the 14th century until today.

The next chance you’ll have to take the tour “Born, sis segles de progrés comercial” will be 21 September from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. The meeting point where the route begins is the ticket office of the Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria, located in Plaça Comercial. This is a route designed for adults and it will be offered in Catalan.

It costs €4 to join this activity. You can book your spot on the Born CCM website.
