Barcelona Imaginada: a walk around the dreams of the past
The Born Centre of Culture and Memory celebrates the last session of an urban itinerary that tells us how an ideal Barcelona was projected in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
As the title of a famous novel by Eduardo Mendoza states, Barcelona is the city of prodigies. Certainly, it is a city with beautiful spaces, good weather, sea and mountains and it’s extremely habitable. But cities are like living organisms that have to evolve, change, make mistakes and start again, and today's Barcelona is the result of the dreams of the past. When the time came to carry out large-scale cultural projects that impacted urban planning, like the two universal exhibitions of 1888 and 1929, and the 1992 Olympic Games, changes were needed in Barcelona, and these changes provided opportunities, and when there are opportunities there are dreams. They made it possible to imagine a better Barcelona, and in many cases it did become better. Now, at the Born Centre of Culture and Memory you can learn more about all of these ideas and changes thanks to the 'Imagined Barcelona' itinerary.
The route allows you to stroll around the city with a guide who will tell you the story of those great transformations of the city, as well as of those who, opposing certain parts of the plans, have been forgotten or silenced. Because when there are dreams, there are also nightmares, and where there are finished projects, there are also failures. The last session of the year of this itinerary is scheduled for 10 December from 11am to 2pm.
