A piano recital by Alfredo Armero
The first third of the 20th century was a time of great musical exuberance and European composers were assimilating new concepts from many different directions. Some looked towards the avant-garde aesthetic (futurism, Dadaism), with its desire for severance, while others turned towards the infectious vitality of the fledgling jazz arriving from across the Atlantic. Others still looked inwards in an attempt to reinvent their own standing traditions.
Such is the case, for example, of acclaimed Catalan composers such as Enrique Granados or Manuel Falla. Next Saturday (3/08), the renowned pianist Alfredo Armero will stage a performance in the Museu d’Història de la Ciutat de Barcelona (MUHBA), where he will interpret a repertoire based around pieces by the aforementioned composers as well as others such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
Before the concert itself, at 6.30pm, César Calmell, professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) will present a conference titled “Spring 1936: Barcelona, capital of European music”.
