World Sustainable Food Capital 2021

Strengthening the link between city and countryside

Barcelona is the World Sustainable Food Capital and, therefore, this year hosts a lot of activities for all audiences.

We are increasingly aware that concepts such as food and health go hand in hand. This relationship is particularly close when we refer to human health, but the impact of a growing and globalized society also requires an emphasis on planetary health. Barcelona is internationally recognized as a territory with its own food discourse and a highly committed agroecological network. Based on this background, it has been designated World Sustainable Food Capital 2021, so this year the city will host activities, initiatives and projects in which sustainable food will be the protagonist.

In a context of climate emergency, Barcelona will aim to promote trade and local agriculture, generate strategies to combat climate change and encourage healthier diets, respectful and accessible to all citizens. That is why throughout the year the city will host a lot of initiatives related to sustainable food and, in fact, this area will have a cross-cutting nature and will be addressed in several public events. An example of this is the City and Science Biennial, which will be held from June 8 to 13 and will include a section of activities on this topic.

In the year of the World Sustainable Food Capital, more than ninety projects and initiatives will be developed, both in the city and in the metropolitan area, to promote a fairer, safer, healthier and more sustainable food system, based on social, ecological and proximity criteria. The 2021 agenda is made up of online and face-to-face activities such as courses on sustainable catering, talks on climate change, exhibitions, cooking workshops, colloquiums, and even an escape room.

Participate and contribute together with Barcelona towards a food transition that improves both human and planetary health. To learn more, click on this link.
