On the 23rd of October the Barcelona Maritime Museum will inaugurate an exhibition entitled Underwater cameras and the challenge of underwater photography. Prior to this, however, the museum has organised a competition in which the public are invited to participate in an exhibition of their best underwater photographs.
The submitted photographs will be digitally printed and form part of an extensive mural which will be displayed in the exhibition area dedicated to the popularisation of underwater photography from the end of the 20th century to the present day. Photographs may be submitted to the email address web.mmb@diba.cat before the 31st of August.
The exhibition Underwater cameras and the challenge of underwater photography will open on the 23rd of October, offering a chronological journey through the history of underwater photography and focussing on the protagonists and how they overcame the challenges facing them in the maritime medium. The exhibition includes more than seventy original pieces, including waterproof, photographic and film cameras and diving equipment from the mid-19th century to the present day. Among the more emblematic exhibits, most notable are the first underwater camera, which dates from 1893, the apparatus designed by oceanographer Jean-Yves Cousteau and the machines that filmed the underwater sequences for such well-known films as License to Kill and Titanic.
