Urban bees come under the spotlight at the Natural Sciences Museum

The Citizens’ Science Section of the Festival of Science, Technology, and Innovation will include an artistic performance relating to bees

Several types of scientific evidence suggest that bees are a reliable indicator of the state of health of our urban environment. With this in mind, and within the context of the Festival of Science, Technology, and Innovation, intermedia artist, composer and guitarist Jose Manuel Berenguer will present a performance designed to recreate the atmosphere inside a bee colony using real-time audio and video recordings of bees buzzing and flying in and out of their hive. The performance will take place next Saturday, June 14th at the Natural Sciences Museum.

The activity is part of the Citizens’ Science Office Urban Bee Project promoted by Barcelona City Council via Barcelona Lab. Urban Bees is supported by FECYT and Socientize, and benefits from the collaboration of both Melliferopolis and Open Bee Lab.

The acoustic performance is an attempt to encourage urban apiculture in Barcelona, a task currently undertaken by collectives such as Bee Barcelona. Berenguer is cofounder of NauCoclea and of the Orchestra of Chaos, and collaborates with the Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Academy. He has also been a member, director and teacher at numerous other organisations.
