Vides rere el taulell (Life behind the Counter)

An insight into Barcelona’s traditional commercial life.

Nostalgia and protest go hand in hand in 'Vides rere el taulell', an exhibition that focuses on the city’s most iconic shops, some of which are now facing extinction or have already closed down. A number of the city’s civic centres will play host to the exhibition, which consists of photographs by Mònica Villanueva and David Torreblanca that aim to capture Barcelona’s traditional commercial life. Coproduced by the city’s network of civic centres and created as part of the Objectiu BCN photography project, it focuses on the figure of the shopkeeper, while combining a note of nostalgia with elements of protest and homage, since its creators question whether the city is in danger of losing certain styles of life and raise the question of what these traditional shops meant to their owner.

The exhibition can be seen at the following civic centres: Casa Elizalde (12/01 to 5/02); Centre Cívic Guinardó (14 to 26/04); Centre Cívic Parc Sandaru (9 to 23/05); Centre Cívic Barceloneta (5 to 27/05); Centre Cívic Sant Andreu (25/05 to 17/06); Centre Cívic Sarrià (5 to 30/09); Centre Cívic Albareda (6 to 29/10); Centre Cívic Navàs (3 to 26/11); and Centre Cívic Cotxeres de Sants (9 to 31/12).
