Viure a la Mediterrània

An exhibition dealing with traditional Mediterranean architecture, in the Museu Marítim de Barcelona

Architecture is very closely related to both the values and the cultural and historic identity of a people. With this in mind, the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) in conjunction with the Museu Marítim de Barcelona present an exhibition titled Viure a la Mediterrània (Living in the Mediterranean).

The objective of the exhibition is to both acquaint people and preserve a valuable cultural heritage, namely, traditional Mediterranean architecture. The exhibition covers the architectonic elements that have shaped Mediterranean towns and villages throughout history. Traditional architecture is a sign of the vitality of a people and is in a constant state of evolution – buildings evolve in order to adapt to changing realities. The desire for comfort, the lack of financial resources or the pressure that result from tourism are all factors that lead to transformations and, at the same time, can lead to the disappearance of certain essential characteristics.

The Viure a la Mediterrània exhibition is an attempt to raise awareness of the value of traditional architecture within our cultural heritage. The protection and revitalisation of this precious heritage is essential for its conservation.
