A walking tour of Wagnerian Barcelona

On the second and final Saturdays of each month, the itinerary will take us on a tour of the theatres where the German composer’s works were interpreted as well as other relevant meeting points

This year sees the celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Richard Wagner and Barcelona will be holding numerous activities in his honour. The music and concert programme will obviously take pre-eminence but is not the only available offering. Musicològics, a company dedicated to the promotion of music, has proposed a walking route through the centre of Barcelona in order to better understand the reception afforded to the works of Wagner in the Catalonian capital.

The route has stops in the theatres where Wagner’s music was played, such as the Teatro Principal and El Liceo, as well as the meeting places of Barcelona’s first Wagnerians, Els Quatre Gats and the cloisters of the old Santa Creu Hospital. The most fervent music lovers used to meet in warehouses such as Can Guàrdia or in instrument makers such as Chassaigne, which used to be located on carrer Pintor Fortuny.

Although today some of these places are mere spectres, they provide a fresh perspective on Wagner and, in consequence, on another side of the city of Barcelona.
