Zoom. The Collection under Analysis at the Museu Picasso

To speak of Pablo Picasso is to speak of one of the most important figures in the history of art. Born in Andalucía, he was one of the best known painters of the 20th century, especially for his role in the founding of the cubist movement together with Georges Braque. In his long career, Picasso’s work evolved into different styles and fields including ceramics, sculpture in bronze, collage, and even poetry. He created more than 20,000 works during his life and he is an essential figure for understanding contemporary art. Barcelona’s Museu Picasso is a major centre for anyone interested in exploring Picasso’s career through the 42,251 works that make up its permanent collection. And we would now like to invite you to enjoy these exhibits from two different perspectives: that of a historian and that of an artist.

You will explore the works with the help of two specialists: an art historian, who will put the work in context within Picasso’s career, and an artist who will propose an artistic activity related to the style and contents of the work. On the 11th of February, the work under analysis is The Wait (Margot), dating from 1901, in which gesture and colour are fundamental aspects in a key work in Picasso’s career. The experts on this occasion are Francesc Fontbona, historian and Mar Saiz, artist. This is actually the second event in the cycle, but luckily there are four more in store:

*17 March 2016: Portrait of Jaume Sabartés with ruff and hat, 1939. An exploration of portraits of people close to the artists and of contemporary practices, with Margarida Casacuberta, philologist, and Consuelo Bautista, photographer.

*14 April 2016: Barcelona Rooftops, 1903. The found image as an element of creation, with Reyes Jiménez, Head of Restoration and Conservation, Museu Picasso, and Luís Bisbe, artist.

*12 May 2016: The Pigeons, 1957. A series within a series, in the later creation of the artista, with Eduard Vallès, historian and Gonzalo Elvira, artist.

*9 June 2016: Madame Canals [Benedetta Bianco], 1905. The psychological portrait: when the portrait becomes the person. With Malén Gual, Curator of the collection, Museu Picasso and Gonzalo Goytisolo, artist.
