Zorilla’s "Don Juan Tenorio", in the Teatro Condal

From the 14th of May to the 28th of June, the Teatre Condal plays host to Don Juan Tenorio, directed by Joan Pera and starring himself and Lloll Bertran. On this occasion the famous romantic drama, written by José Zorilla and published in 1844, acquires comic nuances at the hands of two of the masters of Catalan comedy.
 

The combination of artistic excellence and the fact that the door is open to on-stage improvisation breathes new life into the characters of Doña Inés and Don Juan, and the actors, who in this case represent something akin to a counter-characterisation of the original roles, pay homage to the mid-70s performances of Mary Santpere and Joan Capri in the Teatro Romea.
 

The chemistry between the two actors, who remain faithful to the versified rhythm of the original text at all times, in conjunction with their comic flair, adds an original and contemporary feel to the performance. The play has been represented on Catalan stages on a number of occasions and includes both the well-known and intensely passionate love scenes and romantic characteristics of the original. On this occasion, however, the performance is greatly embellished with the artifices of Pera and Bertran. 
 

In conclusion, a version that, as the director and principle actor of the play states, “is so dishonest it is laughable, but with an honesty that we hope will make the audience laugh”.
