Capgrossos de l’Esbart Català de Dansaires

Fact sheet

In 1967, the group Esbart Català de Dansaires, which was founded in 1908 and is the leading authority on Catalan dance, bought nine generic and identical big heads from the El Ingenio workshop to perform certain dances in their repertoire. The big heads are usually dressed in tunics: four wear green, four others wear red and the last, who acts as the principal dancer or captain, wears a tunic that is half green and half red.

These big heads, which the group uses almost exclusively when on stage, usually perform the Ball de Nans or the Ball de Cabeçuts d’Olot. However, they occasionally change costumes and perform other Catalan dances, such as the Nans Nous and the Nans Vells from the Patum festival in Berga or the Capgrossos de les Planes d’Hostoles.

The big heads from the Esbart Català de Dansaires folk-dance group also appear in parades at many special celebrations. In 2013, the group bought a tenth big head from El Ingenio, which is identical to the other nine.
