Honey and jam

Honey and jam, together with medicinal and aromatic herbs of all kinds, are the most important part of the Fira de Sant Ponç, the fair of Saint Pontius, patron saint of herbalists and bee keepers, which in Barcelona is held in Carrer de l’Hospital, in Ciutat Vella. The festival, on 11th May, falls in the time of spring plenty, when the plants are at their best and the fruit is just ripe enough to make all manner of jams.

Barcelona's Fira de Sant Ponç brings together gatherers and herbalists who offer visitors natural products to improve their health. The fair may have originated from those held in honour of Flora, the Roman goddess of vegetation. Centuries later, this custom has been merged with the veneration of Sant Ponç, who in the 19th century set up the old church of Hospital de la Santa Creu.
