Foment de la Sardana de Barcelona

The Foment de la Sardana de Barcelona dance group was, very specifically, founded on 2nd March, 1921. A short time afterwards, on Saint George's day that year, they gave their first sardana exhibition in Plaça de Sant Jaume. Since its beginnings, the main aim of the group has been to musically educate the people and support sardana composers, including Enric Morera, Juli Garreta, Joan Lamote and Eduard Toldrà.

At the time it was set up, the Foment de la Sardana de Barcelona had its base in Carrer de Jaume Giralt, in the house where the poet Joan Maragall was born. Up until the 1936-1939 war, the group organised concerts, conferences, meets, dances, and competitions. After the war the activities ceased and the group was not able to restart them until 1945. With this new beginning they had to change their name and they became known as the Comisión de Fiestas de la Calle Canuda, which was changed to Círculo Sardanista in 1951. That year the group relocated their base to the home of the Obra del Ballet Popular. The historical name Foment de la Sardana de Barcelona was finally recovered in November 1982.

Since 1984, they have been based at the Centre Cultural Sant Pere Apòstol, in the Ciutat Vella district, a place in the city where the group organises dances and concerts. In addition to this, each season they arrange a couple of concerts in different places in Barcelona.
