“The collection is not only significant for the number of guitars, but also for the quality of materials used to make them”, explained Maria José Anglés, who in charge of the guided tours of the Music Museum at the Auditorium. Barcelona was for centuries a leading centre for guitar makers, she went on to describe.
Guitarra dels Lleons
One of the most outstanding historic instruments is the ‘Guitarra dels Lleons’ [Guitar of the Lions], made in the 17th century and called like this owing to the decoration of the sound board. The instrument includes political symbols such as the shield of the Austrians, who were supported by the Catalans during the “War of Succession” at the start of the 17th century.
The activity “Classical Guitar, the best collection in the world” can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, in two afternoon sessions. Tours last one hour and various languages are available. It is recommended to book at the museum or at the tourist offices.
