New Year in Barcelona: how to welcome in 2022

To bid farewell to the year 2022 and welcome 2023, you are invited to the big party organised by Barcelona City Council, which will take place on Avinguda Maria Cristina. It will kick off one hour before midnight on 31 December with the Font Màgica sound and light show. This will be followed by a performance by the French company Gruope F, directed by Christophe Berthonneau. It will be an original creation for the city of Barcelona to celebrate the twinning of peoples, calling for harmony, understanding and the weaving of complicity based on everything that unites us. The show will also evoke a call for peace. It will be structured in two 12-minute parts.

The dozen before midnight will be an evocation of the original cultures through the celebration of their primordial art. Each minute will be dedicated to a different culture, symbolised through the masks that are used in some ritual ceremony or to which special significance is given. The masks will appear in the air, drawn by the flight of 200 drones and with a soundtrack created expressly by Scott Gibbon. The 12 minutes after midnight – and therefore the first minutes of the new year – will be for fireworks, understood as a metaphor for man’s communication with the cosmos.
