Barcelona City Council has taken legal proceedings to fine the classified ads websites MilAnuncios and Vibbo the sum of 150,000 euros for failing to comply with current animal protection regulations by not removing ads on their sites selling pets illegally. Reiterated failure to comply with the regulations can lead to fines of up to 600,000 euros.

Barcelona City Council is the first authority in the state to start proceedings to penalise the illegal sale of pets on the internet. The case against the websites MilAnuncios and Vibbo involves a fine of 150,000 euros. The fine comes after various warnings to the companies for them to remove the ads from their sites.

Ads on the websites do not comply with the current regulations on pet sales and ownership because they do not cite the registration number of zoological facilities as the breeder or establishment, or because in some cases animals are bred in private homes and the activity is not regulated. Ads offering puppies or kittens under eight weeks old also break the rules, as do ads for unsterilized animals or those with not contractual prescription for sterilisation.

Adoption and responsible pet ownership

As with the illicit sale of animals, their mistreatment or abandonment is an offence. Dogs, cats and ferrets must be identified and registered and receive necessary veterinary attention. They should also be fed properly and have access to decent space and hygiene.

The Barcelona Pet Shelter (CAACB) currently has more than 300 animals waiting to find a home. The centre promotes responsible adoption and has a website offering information on the adoption process and the necessary steps, as well as an appointment system for visiting the centre.
