Jardins de Joan Vinyoli

Pg Sant Joan Bosco, 39

The Jardins de Joan Vinyoli provide a space for walking through an area with heavy traffic.

These gardens were designed in the 1990s, to dampen the impact of heavy traffic with a trees. They are above an underground car park whose entrances and exits can be found on either side of the streets running perpendicular to Passeig de Sant Joan Bosco.

Biodiversity

A little over half a hectare in size, the gardens have a rhythmic cadence that is repeated in their trees. Rows of tall, thin poplars (Populus alba) alternate with tipus (Tipuana tipu), which blossom with yellow flowers during the spring.
The rapid growth of the poplars and delicate nature of their wood more than meet their role of speedily creating a green wall between the city and the path inside. Some poplars have been replaced with golden rain trees
(Koelreuteria paniculata), which rival poplars in height but grow more slowly and are more resistant. There is also a row of nettle trees (Celtis australis) nearby the children’s play area. Yellow bamboo reeds (Phyllostachys aurea) have been planted in straight parterres at the car park entrances.
As part of the events to mark Vinyoli Year, two trees were planted in the central part on 14 June 2014: a carob
(Ceratonia siliqua) and a cork oak (Quercus suber), donated by the councils of Begur and Santa Coloma de Farners.

Landscaping and Design

To accommodate the need for tall trees that would have a screening effect on the adjacent streets, the gardens’ creators modelled a dune landscape with two artificial banks, one with more prominent and the other with gentler slopes, on the boundary with Passeig de Sant Joan Bosco.
