This area links together several green spaces in a zone that was totally redeveloped for the 1992 Olympic Games, and which includes several sports and residential facilities.
Strictly speaking, the park is a succession of squares at several levels − some shaded by pergolas and attractive species of trees − and large roadside parterres, most of them on an incline. This extensive area is full of reeds, ivy climbing over the hillsides and a large number of palm and other trees, some of which were already there when the land was urbanised.
Biodiversity
The first thing that strikes you are the very tall, slender fan palms (Washingtonia robusta) and large Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis). Another notable feature is the slopes covered in reeds (Arundo donax), a species that reminds us of the streams that used to be there.
But the park has many other species, including cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens) and eucalyptuses (Eucalyptus globulus), stone pines (Pinus pinea), olive trees (Olea europaea), white poplars (Populus alba), poplars (Populus nigra italica ), Canary Island date palms (Phoenix canariensis) and date palm trees (Phoenix dactylifera).
Its small squares abound in hackberry trees (Celtis australis), tipu trees (Tipuana tipu) and jacarandas (Jacaranda mimosifolia), while its slopes and parterres have oleanders (Nerium oleander), narrowleaf firethorns
(Pyracantha angustifolia) and ivy (Hedera helix) covering the green surfaces.
Art and Architecture
One of the most popular sculptures, by Claes Oldendurg (1992), is Mistos (Match Cover). It stands at the junction between Av Cardenal Vidal i Barraquer and C/ Pare Mariana and depicts a book of giant matches, the tallest of which is 20 metres high and lit, whereas the others are folded back.
Forma i espai (Form and Space) by Eudald Serra, which was designed in 1966, made in 1992 and is also called Construcció (Construction), stands at the junction between C/ Coll i Alentorn and Av Martí Codolar, opposite the Sant Genís path. This is a monumental work consisting of two steel arches designed, like a portico, to welcome the Olympic athletes and visitors. It was specially built for one of the areas of the Olympic seat: Montbau.
The third sculpture, standing near Mistos on Av Martí Codolar, is Dime, dime, querido (Tell me, tell me, dear) by Susana Solano, which was designed in 1986 and made in 1992.
