Barcelona, crossroads of myths and legends
Barcelona has long been a cradle of diverse cultures – a legacy reflected in the beliefs passed down through generations, whether as legends or stories rooted in mythology. Folklore expert, seasoned storyteller and leading authority on the Catalan capital Joan de Déu Prats proposes a tour starting at França Station that takes in around ten locations linked to Barcelona’s legendary heritage. Along the way, figures such as the sack man, the Old Man of the Sea, the Pi Giant, the executioner and the sorcerers and astrologers who once roamed the city are brought back to life. The route also features Hercules, the mythical founder of Barcelona; the Virgin of La Mercè, known for helping James I in his fight against pirates; and mysterious places like the Umbilicus Urbis. Rather than sticking to the most familiar sights, the tour draws us into an imaginary world that has endured through time and remains woven into the identity of the Catalan capital.
