THE CALL OF THE GAME: CTHULHU ON THE GAMEBOARDS OF LOVECRAFT
In 1987, seven years after the appearance of Dungeons & Dragons, Sandy Petersen designed The Call of Cthulhu for Chaosium Inc., the first game based on the universe of the Cthulhu Myths created by H.P. Lovecraft. The success of that pioneering game, now in its seventh edition and with hundreds of add-ons and extras, spawned card games Mythos and Arkham Horror, Delta Green, Eldritch Horror, Las mansiones de la locura, and many others, including here in Catalonia, and most recently Asesinato en la Mansión Cthulhu. Today, hundreds of thousands of people all around the world are part of the Mites community of gamers both inhabiting and expanding Lovecraft’s universe. This talk, led by writer and translator Javier Calvo and with three audacious gamers - journalist Mar Calpena (about to publish works on the subject), novelist Marc Pastor, and cartoonist Albert Monteys - will allow us to discuss the phenomenon of gaming with Lovecraft forty years after he first appeared on the scene with his dark arts.

Mar Calpena is a journalist working with the general media who spent five years as editor of the role-playing magazine Líder, for which she wrote adventures and publicity campaigns for the likes of La llamada de Cthulhu, and others. Albert Monteys is a creator of strip cartoons and graphic humour. In addition to his work at the satirical magazine El Jueves and the online Orgullo y satisfacción, he has published comics such as the digital Universe!, an adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, and the new Calavera lunar. He also drew the figures for the exhibition Robot dreams.
