Distorted realities: Fantasy, horror and rebellion in Latin American literature
What happens when literary imagination becomes an act of resistance? Many authors of Latin American literature use fantasy to confront reality and deconstruct it, calling for a change in direction. Edmundo Paz Soldán, Alberto Chimal and María Fernanda Ampuero have pushed for change through fantasy, dystopia and horror throughout their careers. Soldán has focused on the environment, especially in El comienzo del paraíso (Páginas de Espuma), a collection of short stories where he explores how human intervention in nature has turned us into strangers on our planet. Chimal, meanwhile, looks at the effects of AI and other technologies in his most recent book, Las máquinas enfermas (Páginas de Espuma), which brings together short stories previously published in other formats. Finally, Ampuero has spent her career blowing up the limits of gender, the patriarchy and normative dissidences. This fantastic trio of authors with shared visions will be led by researcher Lucía Leandro Hernández.
