DOMINGO SANTOS, THE FATHER OF MODERN SPANISH SCIENCE FICTION
Three years after his death, as we approach what would have been his 80th birthday, the Barcelona-born Pedro Domingo Mutiñó (1941-2018), better known by his pen name Domingo Santos, will be the subject of a tribute at Festival 42 for four reasons. Firstly, his birthday, which would have been in December. Secondly, the publication just before Festival 42 of a biography that will finally do him justice, under the name Domingo Santos. Una vida de ciencia ficción (Ediciones El Transbordador), written by the specialist Mariano Villarreal whose intentions and the details of which will be explained by the man himself at the event. Thirdly, also making an appearance at the Festival, and likewise by Villareal is the Domingo Santos’ anthology, Ayer, hoy y siempre (La biblioteca del laberinto), and fourthly, a wish to publicise Catalonia's big names in this genre, because Santos is, after all, one of the greatest: 800 translations, 45 titles, over 25 anthologies, the founder of Nueva Dimensión and the author of the iconic novel Gabriel, among other achievements. It is hardly surprising, as Pórtico representative Isa J. González will explain, that Domingo Santos lends his name to one of the main awards in this genre. Villarreal and González, accompanied by one of the leading specialists in this field, the knowledgeable Juanma Santiago, will introduce you to the work of someone that every fan should be well acquainted with.
