Exhibition on Catalan mythology
Catalan mythology offers a wealth of stories and characters, though for many years it remained in the shadows, eclipsed by more widely known traditions such as Norse and Celtic mythology. Today, however, fantasy authors are increasingly drawing on the oral traditions of Catalonia for inspiration – reimagining this vast mythical universe and giving rise to new stories. The central exhibition of the fifth edition of 42 showcases around fifteen of the most iconic and deep-rooted figures from Catalan folklore, highlighting the traits that link them to the wider world of literature. From Joan de l’Os, reminiscent of American comic-book superheroes, to tales of the Serpent that conjure up Dragon Ball, and even constellation-bladed swords that transport us into the world of Arthurian legend. Bringing it all to life are the illustrations of Laia Baldevey, curator of the exhibition and a specialist in depicting mythology through art. Her most notable works include Mitologia dels Països Catalans [Mythology of the Catalan Countries] and Mitologia de la muntanya de Montserrat [Mythology of the Mountain of Montserrat]. The exhibition also features material on Catalan mythical beasts, loaned by local cultural associations.
