Modern classics: Elia Barceló, Rosa Montero and Cristina Fernández Cubas
Fantasy genres would not be the same without three of their major icons: Cristina Fernández Cubas, Elia Barceló and Rosa Montero. These three authors have been crafting must-read stories and novels for years, showing critics that speculative genres have a place in fine literature. As well as delivering excellent quality in their work (which has been translated into dozens of languages), they have contributed new perspectives and formats to the cultural scene. Fernández Cubas has crafted unsettling short stories in collections such as Mi hermana Elba, La habitación de Nona, Cosas que ya no existen and the recent Lo que no se ve (Tusquets). Barceló, meanwhile, has revisited two iconic legends of horror, namely Frankenstein and vampires, with El efecto Frankenstein (winner of the Young People’s Literature Prize) and La vida secreta de los vampiros (Lunwerg Editores ). Finally, Montero, the author of the must-read Historia del Rey Transparente, has won over science fiction fans with the Bruna Husky saga, which has just ended with Animales difíciles (Seix Barral). In it, she created a hybrid between science fiction and noir, while reflecting on death and grief (a theme found throughout her works). The three authors will talk about their experiences with fellow writer Muntsa Mimó.
