Mythology, tales and curses in the Catalan audiovisual scene
We’ve grown up with Hollywood films, and therefore with foreign imagery and creative traditions. But today, many Catalan audiovisual producers are making short films influenced directly by the mythology, legends and tales of Catalonia, which resonate deeply with viewers. In collaboration with Terror Arreu de Catalunya, a group of 22 fantasy film festivals in Catalonia, we will be screening and discussing short films that are good examples of the use of these themes. Al Nadal toca fusta, by Max Calvera, turns the tradition of hitting the Christmas log (tió) into a horror phenomenon. Siluro, la bestia del Ebro, by Jordi Romero, brings the legend of the ‘lake monster’ to the Terres de l’Ebre. Fèlix a la muntanya de Sant Cebrià, by Marc Pujol, is based on the legend of a wizard imprisoned in a castle. Nen amagat, by Pol Rodríguez, turns the town of Tagamanent into a place that is home to mythological beings. Finally, Malet, by Roger Danès and Alfred Pérez Fargas, tells the story of a curse affecting a rural Catalan villlage in the 16th century. Introducing the short films and reflecting on how Catalan traditions are being incorporated into more and more productions will be Ana M. Vargas, a programmer for Fantboi, in Sant Boi de Llobregat; David Garnacho, director of the Festival de Terror de Sabadell.
