STANISLAW LEM. THE PERSON AND THE CREATOR
Who was Stanislaw Lem? Yes, he was the author of Solaris, the great novel about an intelligent planet that was adapted to film by Tarkovski and Soderbergh. Yes, he was a Polish science fiction writer. And yes, he's a classic author of the European novel genre. But... who was Stanislaw Lem really? A very knowledgeable cultural personality with boundless creativity, a huge sense of humour and a great diversity of interests, the Lem whose centenary we are celebrating this year 2021 was a philosopher who touched on medicine and religion, wrote about contact with aliens because he was a fan of communication and cybernetics, worked with psychology and satire... and much, much more. All this as described by the great specialist Wojciech Orliński i in the biography Lem. Una vida que no es de este mundo, as he himself will explain at the roundtable. And also as experienced by Wojciech Zemek, who was his personal assistant during the author's last ten years of life and who now manages his legacy and the website www.lem.pl. It is worth saying that, between the two of them, this is guaranteed to be one of the best roundtables in Festival 42, as well as a leading event of the Lem centenary celebrations in Catalonia.
Wojciech Orliński has been hailed as the world's leading specialist in the work of Stanislaw Lem, whose centenary we are celebrating this year. He has just seen the Spanish translation of his biography of the Polish author published by the publishing house Impedimenta under the name Lem: una vida que no es de este mundo.
Wojciech Zemek, a Polish philologist specialising in the protection of copyright, was Stanislaw Lem's personal assistant from 1996 to 2006. He currently manages his legacy.
Enrique Redel is a publisher and creator of the publishing house Impedimenta which, together with Alianza, is the publishing house that has paid the most attention to Stanislaw Lem in recent years (with over a dozen titles, including a new biography of the writer, currently in print).
* Event held in collaboration with the Institute of Polish Culture in Madrid.
