Josep Anton Codina

1984 - 1985

In 1984 and 1985 , and for the first and only time in its history so far, the Grec Festival had two co-directors, Joan Maria Gual and Josep Anton Codina.

For his part, Josep Anton Codina was born in Barcelona in 1932. He joined the Adrià Gual Drama School in 1963, working with such leading figures on the Barcelona theatre scene as Maria Aurèlia Capmany and Ricard Salvat. Indeed, Codina was the assistant director on several productions that have gone down in theatre history, including Ronda de mort a Sinera (1965) and La bona persona de Sezuan (1966).  He then began to direct such works as Xavier Fàbregas' Balades del clam i la fam (1968), in the theatre in the dome at the Coliseum, now lost, and Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, in l'Hospitalet de Llobregat. From 1968 to 1975, having founded the Ca, Barret! theatre company with Maria Aurèlia Capmany and Jaume Vidal Alcover, he organised cabaret shows at the legendary Cova del Drac venue. The works staged there included performances of Vidal i Alcover's Manicomi d'estiu (1968) and Palau i Fabre's Homenatge a Picasso (1971). Before this, though, he had presented a clandestine production of Capmany's Preguntes i respostes sobre la vida i la mort de Francesc Layret (1970). He later worked with the Orfeó de Sants Theatre School, directing a production of Alcover i Capmany's Varietat de varietats in 1975. That same year, he helped to found the Barcelona Actors School. In 1980, moreover, he founded the Tarragona Municipal School of Dramàtic Art. He also organised the Tarragona Theatre Festival from 1971 to 1983, whilst in 1988 he began working at Barcelona Provincial Council's Theatre Institute.
