Antonio Morcillo López

The play that won the 2013 SGAE Theatre Prize is set in an abandoned airport, the perfect setting for a tragi-comedy that ferociously criticises the economic policies that have generated so many grotesque situations.

A security guard, the only person who works at an airport that was built only to be abandoned, is confronted by an unexpected visitor: a traveller who, ticket and suitcases in hand, wants to fly to Bangkok, although it has been a long time since a plane took off from this terminal, if such a thing has ever occurred... In a work rich in black comedy, sarcasm and irony, the playwright Antonio Morcillo serves up a no-holds-barred critique of a way of running things that has led to waste of resources and surreal situations like that recreated into this fictional account. Born in Albacete and a graduate in direction and dramaturgy from Barcelona Theatre Institute, Morcillo, who lives in the Catalan capital, is artistic director of Perpetuummobile, an association that organised the Festival of Drama on the PIIGS Crisis in 2014, which was included on last year’s Grec programme. His published plays include Los carniceros (Marqués de Bradomín Theatre Prize, 1998), Despedida II (SGAE Theatre Prize, 2001) and En experimentos con ratas (SGAE Theatre Prize2007). He has written stage adaptations for novels like Jordi Coca’s Dies meravellosos, and Carmelo Samonà’s Fratelli, both of which were premiered at the Teatre Tantarantana.
