Power, particularly its fragile and fleeting nature, is the theme of a play featuring four women in a uncertain world apparently heading for war.
Where is the president? Four women are waiting for him: a war correspondent come to photograph him, an interpreter, the ruler's wife, and the latter’s best friend. The absent president is a dictator, the strained atmosphere presages the rapid outbreak of the revolution and there is no knowing how long he will remain in power. He is late, and they are waiting for him in a luxurious room, dressed in haute couture, vodka in hand... They all have secrets and are all at risk in a changing world (an allusion to today’s world, in full political meltdown) in which the first shots heralding the revolution are beginning to ring out. Trapped as they await a finale that could well be fatal, these four women react to the situation in different ways: with gushing friendliness, by harking back to romantic memories as a way of escaping the present, at least in the mind, or by taking advantage of circumstances to steal things, revealing the predatory nature of the survival. “Splendour” is a disturbing comedy performed by a superb cast of actress, written by Abi Morgan, an Emmy and BAFTA award winning playwright and screenwriter well-known for her work in television, as well as for such plays as Skinned, Fast Food, Lovesong and The Mistress Contract. Morgan has also collaborated with such great stage figures as Neil Labutte and Mark Ravenhill.
