Dimitris Papaioannou

One of the great poets on the contemporary scene fills the stage with fascinating images in a show that fuses physical theatre and performance to speak of human life as a journey of constant discovery.

Imbued with a rare visual intensity, Dimitris Papaioannou’s shows are a blend of experimental actions, physical theatre and performance. Formerly a painter and comic book author, Papaioannou designs his works by creating storyboards illustrating the dreamlike images that he then transfers to the stage. A soundtrack formed by amplified, distorted noises made by the performers, accompanied by fragmented music and sound landscapes, envelopes the action. Papaioannou uses all these elements to talk about life as if it were a journey in search of great discoveries, hidden treasures or to explore, in an almost archaeological way, the most deeply hidden meanings of our existence. Images that are simple only in appearance, images that speak to us of the most sacred aspects of mundane things.

Although he started out in the world of fine art, Dimitris Papaioannou soon turned to the stage, where he became a director, choreographer, performer and set, costume and lighting designer. He founded the Edafos Dance Theatre, a company he worked with until 2012 and which has become an icon in the Greek performing arts world. However, he is perhaps best-known for creating the opening ceremony for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Dimitris Papaioannou creates his shows in cooperation with the performers, and is aesthetically influenced by artists ranging from Jacques Tati to Luis Buñuel, from Buster Keaton to David Lynch.
