Farsa (gènere impossible)

Music, theatre, cinema: these disciplines have crossed over more than once during this Catalan singer’s sparkling career. And they will do so again in a celebration of inter-disciplinarity directed by an Argentinian playwright and director.

Sílvia Pérez Cruz spent her childhood going back and forth between the family home and her mother’s art school. More than once, she saw her mother playing the guitar while her young students drew, or telling the kids to use chocolate to paint the sounds she played on a saxophone. Having witnessed the fusion of artistic languages from an early age, it is no wonder that the artist has brought her music to plays and dance shows, that she has performed her songs for fiction films and documentaries, and that she has used poetry as a raw material in her compositions. Examples of her incursion into different art forms include films like La noche de 12 años, by director Álvaro Brechner; the show Grito pelao, with flamenco dancer Rocío Molina (Grec 2018), and compositions she created for the theatre piece Cyrano, featuring Lluís Homar. Based on these and other experiences with various artistic genres, this spring, Sílvia Pérez Cruz has released Farsa (género imposible), an album that will now be performed on the Teatre Grec stage. Its title uses the word farsa, or farce , which originally meant ‘stuffing’ in French and referred to the short scenes performed by comedians between acts during plays in Louis XVI’s court. Today, farce carries the meaning of ‘nonsense’, hence Pérez Cruz’s use of this word to refer to the duality between what we are and what we show, between apparent wealth and true emptiness, which is so characteristic of our time.
The album hits the stage as a show, with a creative team made up of dancer Elena Córdoba; playwright, actor and poet Pablo Messiez; painter, lighting designer and poet Carlos Marquerie; sound engineer and soundscape creator Juan Casanovas; and wardrobe designer Cecilia Molano, among others. This variety of talents promises to turn the stage into a festival of hybrid and interdisciplinary creation.
