Guided by Lucy Duran – producer, documentary maker and professor of African music at SOAS University of London – Trio Da Kali are coming to Barcelona to bring together the ancient Mande culture and the musical heritage of today’s Barcelona, along with a series of musicians from the city with African origins, in a show they have called The Barcelona Experience. You’ll find them performing at the Teatre Grec, and doing a residency at Fabra i Coats: Fàbrica de Creació de Barcelona, which includes activities such as this open rehearsal and master class for around twenty music students from four of the city’s music schools, as well as music teachers and musicians in general. The public will be welcome if there are still places available.
During the master class, attendees will work on two songs composed by members of Trio Da Kali, which are based on their traditions and were chosen by the Kronos Quartet for their ‘50 for the Future’ project: a library of music from traditions all over the world for string quartets that’s available to students everywhere. In this activity, musicians from Barcelona music schools will be rehearsing these two pieces with the original composers.
The workshop will focus on two songs in particular: ‘Bara Kala Ta’, a composition by Fodé Lassana Diabaté from Sunjata’s Time that is a recreation of a traditional song, and ‘Funtukuru’, a song by Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté that reimagines the tradition of children’s improvised clapping songs and dances.
Activity aimed at the city’s music students, teachers and musicians.
In cooperation with Fabra i Coats: Fàbrica de creació.
The activity is free, but prior registration is required. Booking link available soon.
