Alessandro Sciarroni

U. (un canto) / Save the last dance for me

Mercat de les Flors Sala Maria Aurèlia Capmany

June 28 and 29

One author, two pieces, and two spaces to enjoy multidisciplinary creations where movement is omnipresent. The first, at the Sala Maria Aurèlia Capmany at the Mercat de les Flors to experience a second immersion in Sciarroni’s creative universe. In U. (un canto), a collaboration with Aurora Bauzà and Pere Jou, local creators who have also experimented in many different ways with the relationship between sound and movement. In this piece, part performance art, part concert, Alessandro Sciarroni connects not only voices and bodies but also the musical tradition of northern Italy from the second half of the 20th century with the present moment. The members of the choir, who bring different levels of experience, come together in a choreography that evokes the mystery of existence and the wonder of life.

Afterwards, head over to the Institut del Teatre atrium, to see Save the last dance for me, that brings back the almost extinct polka chinata, a semi-acrobatic dance that emerged in the 20th century under the arcades of Bologna, and was only danced by men in pairs. To impress the girls watching them, they danced among themselves, performing the usual movements but also incorporating others in which they crouched while spinning at high speed. Almost no one knows how to dance the polka chinata anymore, but Gianmaria Borzillo and Giovanfrancesco Giannini do, and they’ll demonstrate it live. They are the protagonists of a show that, as is typical of Sciarroni, may lead them to dance until they drop. Aurora Bauzà and Pere Jou created the music of the show.

Alessandro Sciarroni, who seeks emotional involvement between audiences and performers, works with various disciplines (music, movement, theater, circus, sport...), and is one of the most prominent Italian stage creators of the moment. The Venice Biennale recognised his career with a Golden Lion in 2019. At the 2019 Barcelona Grec Festival, we saw him in Augusto, organising a performance art piece based solely on the laughter of the performers.

The performances start at 7:15 PM or 8 PM, depending on the decision of the viewer.
