Assemblea coral ocellaire

Elena Maravillas

Fabra i Coats Centre d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona

June 27

Neither birds nor other beasts belong inside a museum. But they do on its façades, terraces, courtyards and boundaries, in its stories and images. Outside the art centre, a more-than-human ecosystem unfolds shaping and modifying urban spaces and how they are used. But what happens when we break this boundary and throw open the doors and windows? What can we learn from living alongside other non-human communities? Can we understand, absorb, and adapt our communication and practices to their codes and languages?

Using collective performance art as a research tool, and focusing on urban birds, the Assemblea coral ocellaire proposes a corporeal approach to these other subjectivities. The birds we live with are political subjects in that they reach consensus and make decisions as a community. That’s why the Assemblea coral ocellaire seeks to be a place for experimenting with other mechanisms of community and culture creation through performance art pieces that investigate these other forms of dialogue, creating a final piece in the “new opera” style. Compositions based on collected birdsong spectrograms will take the form of concerts to explore the concepts of communication and dialogue. Assemblea coral ocellaire aims to go beyond research to open a living dialogue, with the human group embodying the observations made and inviting active reflection on new forms of communal relationships.
The project will be carried out by a research group where the interaction between scientific/academic knowledge and artistic practices will allow for exploration of the field, facilitating a productive, ongoing exchange with the aim of creating a collective choral performance to present the group’s questions and conclusions.

The creative factories and Barcelona's museums once again lead a shared experience. A series of museum and heritage spaces in the city become a stage for the residents of the city's artistic creation centers, who engage in dialogue through their proposals with the artistic, historical, or ethnographic collections preserved in each space.

A production by La Escocesa and the Fabra i Coats Contemporary Art Centre

With the support of the Barcelona Crea grant (Creation and Museums)

The activities of Creation and Museums are free, but a reservation will be required.

Registrations will open on June 17th, at 10 a.m.
