La Gente
Los Torreznos
Diversity, differences, and a chickpea. Are “people” a monolith, or are we all actually walking celebrations of diversity? This is the latest question posed by a duo who explores such questions through performance art. No, your chickpea is not like mine.
Since 2000, the Rafael Lamata Cotanda of Asturias and the Jaime Vallaure Fernández of Valencia have been working together with our everyday reality, daily life, and deeply rooted traditions as their material. They believe that contemporary creation should not be limited to a set of more or less cryptic elements understood only by a select few, but should be accessible to everyone. Their stage language, which is closer to performance art than to conventional theatre, is defined by surrealism, absurd situations, words that take on new meanings, and omnipresent irony. Now, they present us with a legume and invite us to reflect on “people”, questioning what or who lies behind this generic term, and exploring how alike or different we all really are. This is an immersive experience that changes with each performance. Have faith, and following the artists’ instructions, interact with the rest of the audience, ultimately your fellow “people”.
This is the latest stage creation by Los Torreznos, a company that steers clear of intellectual pretension in favour of direct, madcap performance art pieces, including. La cultura [Culture] (2015) and Las cosas [Things] (2022), which were seen at previous editions of the Barcelona Grec Festival.
