Renowned experts have gathered in search of the boundaries of musical theatre. When did it begin, and how far can it go? They will explain it all, through song, with the Barcelona Municipal Band. A musical about musicals... and something more.

Little is known about the anonymous artist who convinced Sophocles and Aeschylus to incorporate music and dance into their plays. We only know of their existence because these dramatists wrote of someone called ψηλός μουσικός (Psilós Mousikós), which means “the high musician”. It remains unclear whether this term referred to their role as a musical director or to their physical height. However, there is no doubt that they are the founder of what we know as the musical, a theatrical genre that emerged alongside democracy. Like democracy, musicals have undergone numerous challenges and face colossal hurdles.

And so, in order to prevent a single model from dominating, this symposium with authoritative voices will delve into the origins and boundaries of the genre, if such boundaries exist. By confronting ideas and repertoire, they will pay tribute to the high artist who changed the history of theatre and, unwittingly, of democracy.

A new foray by the Barcelona Municipal Band, conducted by maestro José Rafael Pascual-Vilaplana, accompanies a selection of great voices in the Grec Festival’s programme. We saw them in Plaça del Rei at Grec 1980, and since then, countless times, most recently in 2016, during a Beethoven concert at the Teatre Grec, and in the 2017 edition, accompanying a symphonic concert by singer Santiago Auserón. With over 130 years of history, it was founded in 1886, and will celebrate its 140th anniversary in 2026. Strongly involved in the cultural life of the city and always open to experimenting with new formats, it is the perfect partner for the Barcelona Grec Festival.
