Het Lamb Gods. Primera parte: La Pastora “Idilio”
A bold piece of experimental theatre with a stunning visual impact that tells an interspecies love story starring an intergalactic shepherdess.
In the early 15th century, brothers Hubert and Jan Van Eyck created the altarpiece The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb for Saint Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent. Experts consider it one of the earliest and most exquisite oil paintings depicting nature. This polyptych consists of twenty-four scenes, with the Lamb of God at its centre. The theatre company El Temblor uses this masterpiece as the starting point for a series titled Het Lam Gods. The first part unfolds as a pastoral sci-fi drama, presented as a moving altarpiece infused with Mediterranean lyricism and folklore. Somewhere in the universe, a shepherdess hears the sounds and music of Earth, sent into space by the Voyager probes launched in 1977, and decides to visit the planet. During her stop in Ghent, she enters the cathedral and, upon seeing the Van Eycks’ Lamb, falls hopelessly in love. The narrative draws from Plato’s philosophy, Christian iconography, and the conventions of Japanese Noh theatre. Carefully measured pacing, moments of striking visual and sonic beauty, and a unique synthesis of Christian celebrations with a meticulously crafted aesthetic define this remarkable production.
It is the second part in a series that Victoria Aime, a Franco-Spanish artist born in Granada, is working on with her company El Temblor, which she co-founded with Borja López. Her work focuses on sensory stimuli, the emergence of images, and rhythm. She creates theatre at the crossroads of performance art and installation, invoking the history of art and science. Her recent works include L’aterratge [The Landing] (Madrid, 2021) and Vicis i Virtuts [Vice and Virtue] (Granada, 2024), both parts of the Het Lam God series, as well as PPPP (Madrid, 2023), created in collaboration with Carlos Pulpón.
