Agreement to tackle energy povertyA broad deal has been reached with the Government of Catalonia, other local administrations and the third sector to make a proposal to electricity and gas companies to tackle energy poverty. The proposed agreement establishes that supply companies fund 60% of costs relating to energy poverty and assume 100% of debts accumulated by vulnerable families, accredited as such by social services, up to the date the agreement is signed.
The Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Provincial Council the Social Third Sector Board and the Alliance against Energy Poverty have presented a proposal for an agreement that the Catalan government will put to energy and gas distribution companies to help vulnerable families.
The text establishes that supply companies will assume 100% of debts accumulated by vulnerable families, accredited as such by social services, up to the date the agreement is signed.
The proposal also requires electricity and gas companies to collaborate with administrations to cover the costs resulting from energy poverty. This will be done with a solidarity fund to be set up by the Government of Catalonia. Supply companies will have to provide 60% of the funds and public administrations 40%, generating economic resources for local administrations to provide subsidies for vulnerable households.
The Government of Catalonia will also set up a managing body to centralise communication with supply companies and coordinate subsidies for people accredited as vulnerable according to Act 24/2015, with the cooperation and participation of local entities.
