Agreement with local people to start renovating the low-budget housing in Can Peguera

A pilot project is to get under way to define the work needed and completely renovate a block of eight homes, preserving the low-budget houses typical of the neighbourhood of Can Peguera in the district of Nou Barris. The renovation is a priority for the City Council for regenerating the neighbourhood.

The Can Peguera neighbourhood is one of the last remaining examples of this type of cheap low-build housing in the city. The homes were built in 1929 for the families of workers who came for the Universal Expo in 1929. There are 616 ground-floor homes in all, each with between 40 and 60 square metres of floor space. The homes were built to have a short lifespan but are still standing today. Barcelona seeks to preserve the living memory of this housing and at the same time launch a project to renovate them and improve public space, mobility, green space and facilities in Can Peguera.

Agreement has been reached with local people to start renovating eight homes in the area delimited by the streets of Bellcaire, Darnius, Espinauga and Cistellet. Preparatory work will be conducted and technical inspections made to define the work to be carried out in the whole block, with a budget of nearly one million euros earmarked for the project.

Work at the facilities balcony

As part of the Neighbourhood Plan for Turó de la Peira and Can Peguera, work has now begun to improve public space and accessibility in the strip known as the facilities balcony, a space of 7,500 square metres between C/ Beret and the Associació Juvenil Tronada, and from Parc del Turó de la Peira to C/ Vila-seca. With a budget of 4.1 million euros, work will improve connectivity and accessibility between the neighbourhoods of Can Peguera and Turó de la Peira by adding stairs and a lift. Urban furniture, lighting and trees will also be renewed, taking into account the gender perspective.
